Jandar arrived in town safely, thanks be to Thor. He reported to the Guild where he hoped he might find a job and a hot meal.

There was in Saltmarsh no temple dedicated to Thor, but there were rumored to be a clan or two in the bayou lands that still came to the city occasionally to trade.

The temple Fharlanghn would have to suffice, Parent god to Wayfarers both at sea and upon the land. And boy was it ever a good time to be looking for work in Saltmarsh. Recent political developments have put this city to unease, and it is the Temple's responsibility to stay the way of the road, enforcing free trade, and commerce.

By all rights Jandar was one among many that year to be hired by a slew of guilds, and operations. Temple Fharlanghn is located in the Summit building (Area 9 Saltmarsh) where there are a number of venues like food vendors, and cantinas. .

Without fail on Thursdays, Jandar attended Temple Fharlanghn. He always brought his big hammer which he considered to be a sort of holy symbol.

Jandar had also taken to eating a lot, spending his guild pay on packing away 4 square meals a day. He drank sparingly and tried to stay out of trouble.

"Let me guess," said a man having a scroll and pencil pointing at ye, "4 round meals a day, a liter of beer, and a hard bed to sleep sitting up on;"

He sat down at the bench where Jandar was having noon bread at. He scribbled a few things on his scroll. "I see you're new here. We pay by post," he explained, "For every job posting you take up and accomplish you get a different salary for your troubles."

"We own the Summit building," he gestured all around. "The chapel is on the street level and open to anyone. And as you have clearly discovered the food vendors are on the second tier. The guildsmen usually eat here in the cafeteria - Or loiter in the lawn talking about work between classes. On the third tier of the Summit are the bunks and basins (to have a bath in). Be careful not to use the hind doors on the third tier, they open up into empty space, and you could very possibly find yourself swimming in waste water if you don't mind your feet."

"If you are inclined to give me your name I'll be happy to give you the key to a trunk upstairs, and a bed. Bludgeoning classes are in an hour at the chapel."

"Let me guess," said a man having a scroll and pencil pointing at ye, "4 round meals a day, a liter of beer, and a hard bed to sleep sitting up on;"

Jandar nodded dumbly. The man obviously had experience with Northmen.

He sat down at the bench where Jandar was having noon bread at. He scribbled a few things on his scroll. "I see you're new here. We pay by post," he explained, "For every job posting you take up and accomplish you get a different salary for your troubles."

Jandar grunted an acknowledgement, his mouth being full.

"Thanks for the tip."

"If you are inclined to give me your name I'll be happy to give you the key to a trunk upstairs, and a bed. Bludgeoning classes are in an hour at the chapel."

"Jandar's the name, bludgeoning is my game."

Jandar finished up his meal and business with the gentleman. He would then check the job postings on the way to bludgeoning class. He brought his own hammer.

Beside the point I wrote:
Alright, I'm getting set up for the weekend. Let's get together saturday afternoon or sunday's.
Your character has gained an object: Trunk Key

Indeed; job postings were as inconspicuous as an elephant in the room. One might have mistaken it, but for a steady stream of guildsmen with gear getting them like franks from a vendor.

There's a loud job master putting units together on the first floor. He doesn't like the looks of Jandar; and keeps overlooking him for several turns. (turns are different then rounds, a turn is usually one minute long or rather consists of ten rounds). One of the young iron workers suggested to Jandar that he properly equip himself with a "cup" and a myriad of other gear. Jandar probably made mental note to find out more about that later.

And then at first a slow rumble, then rapid pounding of drums, bludgeoning class was announced. Nobody noticed that Jandar brought his own hammer at first, they sang the national anthem, and proceeded to practice bludgeoning in small groups of 3 and 4 among 20 peons. The peons have an AC of 10, are made of wood, and gird with piece meal armor. Bits of whole suits but tattered lie strewn around the warm stone walls which are high, and are enameled in single paned glass windows. At 10:00 AM the sun shines in here making it warm during exercise.

Jandar's coach watches him carefully. It is firstly his turn; his peers look at him critically.

Roll 4 attacks, you - and deal damage if you successfully hit the AC of 10. Try to show your modifiers if you like, can you find them on your character sheet?

9, 2, 5, 6 were my rolls, which isn't very good. I found a modifier of +4 to my attacks so its

13,6,9,10 but i don't know what i need to hit AC10, my guess would be that's one hit only:

Jandar finds that he is nervous around the new instructor and feels a little tentative. He gets one solid hit, but feels like he should have done better. He needs guild jobs and that has preoccupied him. He wants to find out what a cup is and then try again for a job.

To hit an armor class of ten; you need a roll of 10 or better on the d20. Your modifier further facilitates a successful hit - you personally may with a six or more.

Jandar was evidently just warming up, but already his peers were looking at him with less scrutiny, and more admiration.

(you can roll dice directly here in the forum, now - refer to the Tools topic for an explanation on how to use them) It's as easy as posting.

Armor has a hardness of 10; That means it ignores ten damage, always. If you dealt 11 damage, however, it would lose 1 hit point of it's five. I know that's an advanced lesson, but suffice it to say that you hit the peons, only you didn't damage them.

When Jandar had finished hitting them (or trying to) a few times, so did one of his peers proceed to.

Having no modifiers, the peer deftly lands three solid hits. He has not a greathammer, though. His only does 1d8 damage - but he has a +2 modifier to his strength which applies to his damage.

He does modestly better then Jandar, and the peon reels from the loss of one hit point. "He very nearly broke the armor!" pipes one of the students. Two more take turns.

But nobody can do quite as well as the first student did directly proceeding Jandar. The instructor takes a moment to explain to the third peer how to chuck up his grip, and use the momentum of the hammer to deliver a blow, rather then the muscle. "Let the weapon do the work." he said. The student nodded understanding.

The instructor took a hard eye toward Jandar, however. He said very loudly, "Why don't you think about your first volley a moment, lad. You've got skill. Have another go at it. If you're half as dumb as you look you'll make the same mistake again."

Jandar may try to hit the peons four more times.

i checked my character sheet and don't seem to have a damage bonus, so the 9 is just short of causing actual damage, i'd say it made the thing wobble a good deal though Wink

i got a second damage roll, evidently

his first strike is true

. Jandar imagines that he damaged the target a good bit, however, it also caused the thing to sway and Jandar's second strike skims it and his last two are not well done at all. His chest heaves with the workout and his face betrays no emotion at his succes or failure. He steps aside for the next man in line.

Indeed; (and yes - you get to add your strength modifier to your damage rolls when using the greathammer) Jandar delivered one strong blow to the peon, and nearly broke the armor! Hanging on by a tattered strap it manages to absorb, or deflect your next three strokes.

Just then...

Doing 2 points of damage. He says very gravely "Remember, you, that your waist and everything below it is the foundation of thy strength. See how unsteady you become when you have no knees?"

Jandar's peers nod agreeably; and without hesitation begin taking their turns with the pell.
